Font & Typeface Humor

We all have that font or fonts that absolutely drive us crazy. As a designer, my list is probably longer than most. The usual suspects to be included on a most hated list are Arial, Helvetica, Comic Sans, Hobo, Brush Script, Papyrus, etc. Some of these are hated more for their abusive usage than any qualms about their quality. Except for Comic Sans. Fuck that font. Fuck. It.

Helvetica is an incredibly well made font and is extremely useful in a lot of design situations. Because of that fact EVERYONE uses it. Everyone. Every. One. Hence the inclusion on many "Most Hated" lists.

I just had a client request to use Comic Sans on his business cards. On his BUSINESS CARDS! A business card is, in most cases, the first impression that a potential customer will get about your company. You want it to be as professional as possible. Or, at the very least, you don't want it to look like it was done in Crayon by your 3-year-old niece.

In honor of my current twitchiness, I thought I would share a bit of font and typeface humor that I have collected over the years.

    1. hahaha Thanks, that is actually the only original content one in the post. I made that one and the Arial one right above it, but I had seen the Arial one online a while back, just couldn't find it again to post it.

  2. Drats. I often default to Helvetica because I like it. But I didn't realize everyone else does too. I hate being unoriginal, so I'm not going to use it as much anymore. Times New Roman, here we stay.

  3. Oh man I would use Helvetica all day everyday in comparison to Comic Sans. Everyone know its the worst font in the universe. I didn't even know how truely evil it was until you showed me purple comic sans. I could feel the rage inside of me building.

    1. I constantly have clients send me "layouts" they made in Microsoft Word to show me how they want a sign or graphic to look. I can't even properly express the rage I feel when I see blue Comic Sans. At least 3 out of 5 "layouts" that I get from clients has blue Comic Sans. FFFFUUUUUUUU!!!!!

  11. I <3 Helvetica. And I don't care who knows it. I also start sentences with articles and sometimes purposely use poor grammar and ascii art to demonstrate affection. I believe approaches like these are acceptable, even though I have degrees in Journalism and Mass Media and Graphic Design, because I was also taught that 'ya gotta learn the rules before you can break 'em,' and I certainly learned all the rules. With that being said, however, it's NEVER acceptable to use Comic Sans. I don't care if you DO create comics for a living, or are even an educator of elementary-aged children. Seriously. NEVER acceptable. Never. That rule really should have been one of the original Ten Commandments. Or, at a minimum, one of the Eight Deadly Sins.
