It is so incredibly hot in my office...

So let me tell you a bit about my job. I am, for the lack of a better term, a graphic designer. I refuse to call myself a graphic "artist" like many in my line of work do simply because what I do is not art. I work for a sign company. I'm not so much talking street signs as I am big monstrosities of metal and electronics. You know those big school and church signs with the LED message boards and all that in them? Yeah, I design those. Not exactly where I pictured myself at this point in my life but the bills have to be paid.

So in addition to designing these ginormous (Holy crap! Ginormous is a word? I fully expected spell check to tell me I was stupid. But it didn't. That's pretty awesome.) signs we also do a full line of graphics and printing. You know, car wraps and murals and stuff like that. Our machine prints directly onto vinyl that has an adhesive backing. This material must be kept in a climate-controlled area with a consistent temperature and humidity level or else all sorts of havoc will be played on it.

So, I told you all this to tell you this:

It's fucking hot in my office...

I always leave the A/C set to 78 degrees when I leave the office. When I get here in the morning I turn it down to 72. As hot as it gets here the A/C runs pretty much all day and keeps my office around 76 degrees. This is comfortable to me and is a good temperature range for the vinyl. But apparently someone decided to turn the A/C in my office completely off after I left yesterday.

I hate everyone and everything right now.

  1. I think I'd be pretty mad if someone played with the A/C. I doubt I could work in 90 degree heat. Hell at those temperatures I can barely move. Ginormous is a word? Awesome.

    1. I can handle 90 degrees. It isn't all that bad. Besides, the temp is down to 78 by this point. More than comfortable. The high today is suppose to be 103. Which means it will easily hit 109 down in the shop. I'm hoping I get to spend most of my day in the office. haha

    1. I wish. But part of my job requires me to be on-site to run the printing equipment. It really isn't too bad. Much better than working outside in the heat. haha

  3. Sounds like you're having a rough time.
Also, that wasn't the kind of stuff I imagined when you said graphic designer. Still, sounds pretty neat! Do you get personal freedom when it comes to designing those things, or do you just got to "make stuff work"?

    1. I really can't complain. I'm less upset about it being hot in my office than I am about any damage that the heat may have caused the printing material.

I do get a bit of freedom with the designs. Usually we have a logo to incorporate and sometimes the customer will have a general idea of what they want or at least an opinion on which colors to use. From there I will do a few mock-ups and send them and we go from there.

Sometimes you get it right on the first shot. Sometimes you do 20 different revisions. Its all about making the customer happy but still providing them with a product that will project a professional image.

P.S. I think you have an awesome job.

    P.P.S. I didn't know ginormous was a word neither. :)

  6. Man, I sure am glad I consider 90 degrees normal. Sucks for you though.
